Have you ever vented about a client or boss on your Facebook account? Have you ever fibbed and said you couldn’t attend work/event because you were sick when you really had something else to do? Did you post about what you were doing on a social media site?

More and more people are turning to social media sites to check up on employees/ companies. Some people tell their whole life story on social media sites. Every thing they do every day is posted for the world to see. They vent about what a jerk their boss has been. They share pictures from a party they went to when they were suppose to be home sick. They do these things without ever thinking about the long term effects of their postings.

More and more companies turn to social media sites before they hire new employees. Boss’s check on current employees. Customers also turn to social media sites to research a business they are considering using.

There are some rules that need to be followed when using social media sites.

  • Never post something offensive about a boss, client, customer, etc. You never know when they might stumble upon that information. Even if they don’t see it, a friend or relative of theirs might.

  • Never give any personal details about customers/clients. You are breaking the clients confidentiality and in some case the law.

  • Never lie about being sick or having an emergency and then post how much fun you are having at another event.

  • Think before you vent. Are you going to post something that could later come back and haunt you.

  • Set your posts to private. Only allow friends to see your posts. This doesn’t give you a free card to do the above, but it can help with who will be seeing your posts.

  • Be careful which videos you share on social media sites. Would you really want a potential employer or client seeing you stumbling around drunk?

The main point is to think before you post something on a social media site. Your reputation is important and can take years to establish. However, it can be ruined with one 140 character Tweet, or Facebook post.
