Earlier in the year, Google launched its vulnerability program which is a system to reward researchers who found bugs in any of the web properties belonging to Google. The class of bugs which would qualify for a reward was stated as “any serious bug which directly affects the confidentiality or integrity of user data…”

A few days ago, Google reported on its online security blog that the results have been fantastic and they plan to award $20,000 to researchers who have already spotted bugs. The awards are from $500 to $3,133.7, depending on the severity of the bug spotted.

The vulnerability program is limited only to Google.com, YouTube.com, Blogger.com and Orkut.com and does not extend to Picasa, Android or other Google properties.

If you skillful researcher with the talent for spotting bugs, you might want to get in on the Google vulnerability program while it is still going.

Amazon.com had indicated they will be offering a free usage tier for its Amazon Web Services. With this announcement, Amazon takes a giant step from establishing themselves as a retailer-only, to a retailer also doing business as a technology company.

Effective November 1, all new AWS users will be offered a myriad of free services, all good for one year. The services range from 750 hours of Amazon EC2 Linux Micro Instance usage to 100,000 requests of Amazon Simple Queue Service. This free AWS tier signals Amazon’s heightened interest in web technologies, and is hoping to catch developers early as it works to expand its web footprint. These free services may lead to the start-up for fully-functioning companies.

Analysts are saying this could lead to a definite shift in Amazon’s business direction. What do you think? Will you take advantage of the free AWS services?

“Chromeless”, an experimental project developed by Mozilla allowing developers to create their own browser interfaces using HTML, JavaScript, and other web technologies, has just been released.

Mozilla developed the browser with the belief that they should be more customizable, and Chromeless is their pre-alpha experimental answer. The browser utilizes iframes instead of XUL, and applications are executed from an HTML file. This HTML accessibility allows developers to use standard technologies to essentially create their own browser.

This project is in the very early stages and changes are expected to happen quickly and often. Developers wanting to jump on the bandwagon immediately with Chromeless should keep this in mind.

Any of you out there looking to venture into the adult entertainment world should best keep your wallets closed. Sex.com may be on the market, but it carries a hefty asking price of $13 million.

Escom, LLC, the current owner of the domain, made headlines awhile back when PETA called for the company to donate the domain to them so they could use it as a tool in a recent ad campaign. Clearly, Escom wasn’t interested in charity.

It’s been reported that a deal has been made with Clover Holdings Ltd., a company that outbid 12 others in the quest for the domain. No reports have been made on what will be done with the domain but most are thinking the intentions are pretty obvious.

Google just added a useful feature to Google Docs. Users now have the ability to drag-and-drop images from the desktop into a Google Docs document.

The new feature works with all the latest versions of the “top” browsers, including Safari, Google, Firefox, and Google Chrome, and does just what you’d expect. Instead of importing an image using the traditional web uploader, doing a Google Image Search, or entering in a URL, you can now just drag the image from the desktop directly into your document.

It’s getting simpler for developers to add features to web applications to make them act more like desktop applications, thanks to HTML5. Google’s online office suite has taken another big step forward.

How many of you use an online office suite? Do you think Google Docs can replace traditional desktop programs like Microsoft Word?

Buddy Media, a company providing Facebook Page management tools to brands, has just announced that the company’s total funding is now over $33 million, thanks to $23 million just raised in Series C Funding.

Buddy Media has created an all-in-one social media management system for agencies and marketers. This enables them to create, manage, and campaigns on Facebook. The platform allows agencies to manage Facebook pages in a variety of languages, driving and increasing user and brand engagement. Those using Buddy Media need no prior FBML knowledge in order to create sleek and creative pages on Facebook.

Currently 300 agencies and brands are using Buddy Media, including the NHL and the Dallas Cowboys.

The company intends to use this new funding towards the hiring of more employees and further product development. If the company continues with the success it’s already experienced this year, it may be on track to making $20 million by year’s end.

Do you find value in companies like this? Or do you prefer to go it on your own when it comes to designing Facebook pages?

Yahoo is set to launch a new service later this fall called “Y Connect” with a set of features that make it look a lot like “Facebook Connect.” Y Connect will serve as a user’s portable identity management system, integrating Yahoo content on third-party websites and sharing data with other Yahoo contacts as to what a user is doing, and where.

Contacts will receive these updates via Yahoo Pulse, the activity stream launched four months ago to compete with other social offerings like Google Buzz.

There aren’t many details available yet on the release, but Yahoo indicated that the new service would assist advertisers in tracking user activity and interests. In light of the recent struggles Yahoo has had with its website and talks of a takeover, the company may be releasing Y Connect as a way of revitalizing the website.

Yahoo.com, the Internet’s largest portal, was down for several hours yesterday for users both in the US and abroad. Speculation is surrounding the timing of the site crash, as rumors of an AOL merger surfaced less than a day before the site went down for the count.

While Yahoo Mail and Yahoo News didn’t appear to be affected, this is all indicative of some serious issues, as those in tech world have indicated they’ve never seen the Yahoo homepage itself go down. Ever.

Reports suggesting that a potential AOL takeover of Yahoo is possible also point to the fact that Yahoo is positioning itself to fight this. The potential effect a merger like this could have on the search world is interesting, as both companies bring very viable, yet different, search engine platforms to the table.

With numbers topping $7.29 billion, quarterly growth was charted at 7%. Google’s CEO credits these numbers to display and mobile, which are showing “significant momentum.”

A breakdown of the earnings show that Google-owned sites generated revenues of $4.83 billion in the third-quarter, while Google’s partner sites through the AdSense programs, generated $2.20 billion. Both of these showed 22% increases when compared to the same quarter from 2009.

Aggregate paid clicks, including those related to ads served on Google sites, as well as the sites of AdSense partners, increased 16% over the third quarter of 2009. The average cost-per-click increased approximately 3% over the third quarter of 2009.

Also of note is the number of full-time employees at Google. As of the end of September 2010, Google employed 23, 331 full-time employees, which is up almost 22,000 employees from just June of 2010.

If Google continues this trend into the fourth-quarter, they could approach $30 billion in total revenue for the year.

It’s safe to say that Chargify, the service that allows startups to easily incorporate support for subscription payments into their products, has had better days. The service launched a year ago with an attractive pricing package that catered to SaaS companies and Web 2.0. Included was even a free package with companies having less than 50 subscribers. After some number crunching, it seems as though this pricing structure won’t work in the long-term and Chargify needs to make pricing changes. Subscribers aren’t happy.

The free package offering has gotten the axe and prices on entry-level products have been doubled. While it’s not uncommon for a company to hike up its rates, Chargify did so without a program grandfathering-in current users under the old rates. This will certainly mean the company is going to experience some serious backlash.

In response, Chargify has tried to appease it’s customers with a “Bootstrapping plan”, available for a reduce price but only available for the first 100 customers signing up for Chargify before the new rates went into effect.

On the upside, Chargify will be Level 1 PCI Compliant in the next few weeks and it’s offering US-based tech support 24-hours a day.
