Afilias, an Irish Internet infrastructure company, announced that it is buying Top Level Domain Ltd, the registrar for the .mobi Internet domain for mobile Web sites.

Afilias, founded in 2001 by several technology and Internet companies, already owns “.info” and had been running “.mobi” and others under contract. Through the acquisition of “.mobi” outright, Afilias will get an undisclosed annual fee for each of the nearly 1 million “.mobi” names registered.

The financial terms of the sale were not released.

Operations began in 2006 for the “.mobi” suffix as a home for Web sites that are specifically tailored for mobile device screens. The creators of the company that had owned the domain, mTLD Top-Level Domain Ltd., include Nokia Corp., Microsoft Corp., Google Inc. and T-Mobile.
