Barnes & Noble has announced the debut of "PubIt!", their Web-based platform for independent publisher and authors.
The platform allows creators to digitally distribute their content through Barnes & Nobles' eBookstore, as well as on BN.com. Publishers set up their own accounts, upload their eBooks, set their own list price, and track their own sales and payment history. They're allowed to price their titles anywhere from $.99-$1999.99. Royalties are received based on this given price, and the percentage decreases as the list price increases.
Turn-around time for the platform is fast; new content is available for sale within 24-72 hours after the upload. Content can be uploaded using ePub files or publishers may even use their own Microsoft Word, TXT, RTF, or HTML files and the PubIt! platform will convert to ePub for free.
This is great news for independent publishers and writers struggling to get a foot in the door with traditional publishing houses. This release may change the playing field for these talented writers that now have an avenue for getting their work out there and purchased. This news is also beneficial for online companies looking for a cheap way of publishing their eBooks and reaching the masses beyond their own websites.
