Google has verified that it recently purchased a 3D user interface software company known as BumpTop. This purchase has those who watch the industry quite eager to see how Google will use BumpTop. There is hope that the software will be integrated into both the Android and Chrome mobile operating systems.
BumpTop is a desktop environment that is used to replace the usual Windows or Macintosh desktop. It enhances the functionality of the user’s desktop by imitating how an actual desk would be used. Documents, programs, and photos are three-dimensional boxes that lie on a virtual desk. They can be placed anywhere on the desk by using a mouse or touchpad. These boxes can be stacked on top of one another, as well as bumped to the side or tossed against one of the virtual walls. Selected multiple items are “lassoed” by using the mouse to draw a circle around them. The original BumpTop software will be available for one week in order to let those who are interested to download the software.
So far, there are not too many details available as to what Google plans to do with BumpTop. This leads to speculation as to what the company has planned. Google is working with hardware manufacturers on “Pro” netbooks that are designed to be operated with Google Chrome. There is also a question as to whether or not Google will make a Chrome branded tablet computer that can compete with the App-le iPad. If so, BumpTop could make a perfect mobile and Chrome application with multi-touch features.
