A few months ago, Swipely was available by invitation-only. All that changed today, as Swipely has made its membership available to the general public.

What is Swipely? To put it simply, Swipely is a service that allows members to share purchases by either allowing the service to grab purchase info from email receipts or linking the debit or credit card directly to their Swipely account.  The more swipes a member gets, the more badges they earn. Early badge-earners will earn rewards like free coffee and movies.

What do these swipes do and why are they so important? Swipely wants to turn swipes into a consumer platform, where users can connect and comment on the products they purchase. It’s meant to be an online extension of the offline conversations we all have about products all the time. There’s opportunity to provide consumer reviews, and “swipes” are published publicly on the site, in a Twitter-like format.

Consumers benefit from not only earning freebies, but also discovering great new products, restaurants, etc. through viewing “swipes” of others. Businesses benefit by getting their name out there. The more consumers who “swipe” at their establishment, the more opportunity for others to discover them.

There is some consumer hesitation, as would be expected, with sharing credit card information in such a manner. That’s why there is the email receipt option. Still, Swipely boasts that 1/3 of its members share their credit and debit card information with the site.
