What Type Of Header Tag Do I Use If All Page Items Are Equally Important?

I have a page where I am listing the names of a couple of different dog species. I used h1 for the page name which is “Guard Dog Species”. But I don’t want to use h2, h3, h4 for the actual dog species titles because that makes h2 seem more important than h3 when all the dog species names are of equal value. I still want my page to be SEO friendly so what do I do in this situation?

It may differ according to the program you're using, but you can keep using the h1 on the two species titles. Try it and see if it works for you. It works on my program that way.

This is a very important element to consider when writing out your site copy. Use of heading tags helps users, web browsers and search engines alike know where the major key points of your copy are.

Your main page title should use the <h1> tag — this shows what your page is about. Use of additional tags, such as <h2> and <h3> are equally important by helping to break down your copy. For one, you’ll see a visual break in the text. But as far as the search engines are concerned, it will automatically know what your topics are on a page. The various heading tags give a priority to the content and help index your site properly.

Use header tags to introduce web pages and paragraphs. The words The Header Tag at the top of this page are an example of its use.

One advantage to using the Header tag is that some search engines rate them higher than regular text, when indexing your site.

They come in six default sizes. (Largest to smallest)

    <h1></h1> through <h6></h6>
