There are many businesses, both large and small, who use Google AdWords. A leaked report has revealed what companies spend the most on Google AdWords and how much they spend. The report only covers the money spent on AdWords in the month of June, but it can probably be assumed that around the same amount is spent every month.

BP spent $3.59 million dollars on AdWords in June, but this was at the height of the Gulf oil spill crisis. Usually BP doesn’t rank so highly in a report like this. The spending was done to try and repair the damage done to BP’s image.

The rest of the companies are big brands that are known for spending thousands or millions on marketing.  AT&T Mobility spent the most money on AdWords in June at a whopping $8.08 million dollars. The Apollo Group, the same company that owns such online colleges as Phoenix University, spent the next highest amount on AdWords at $6.67 million dollars. Expedia, Amazon, Ebay, Hotels.com, JC Penny, Living Social, and ADT Security were the other companies that ranked in the top ten of AdWords big spenders.

In all, 47 advertisers spent more than a million dollars in June. There were 71 who spent between $500,000 and one million and 357 who spent between $100,000 and $500,000. The customers who were counted in the report were direct bill customers. It didn’t take into account all over the advertisers who represent smaller companies and make up a good deal of Google’s $23 billion dollars worth of global revenue every year.

It’s important to know what big companies are spending no matter how small your own company is. You may not be able to afford $100,000 for your AdWords campaign, but you can study the campaigns of the very successful companies and see if you can adapt any strategies that will suit your business.

Is AdWords a large part of your marketing? Or do you use another form of marketing?
