Google has a new plan: they are going to move forward on white spaces. There are five current FCC Commissioners and these five will soon meet in order to set the final technical rules for white spaces.

Google is hoping that if the rules are worded correctly, then the Commission will take a very big step towards something everyone is wanting. That step is to put into the hands of the public faster and better Internet connections.

TV white spaces are also known as ‘Wi-Fi on steroids.’ It is powerful enough to allow applications and new innovations to be used that are not available or even possible over traditional Wi-Fi.  White spaces allow for things like blanketing a city with wireless Internet access, like Wilmington, North Carolina has or the ‘smart grid’ in Plumas County, California. Regular citizens can even use white spaces in many ways and do not need a license from the FCC.

Google TV devices could be rolled out as soon as this month if all goes well and Google hopes to take advantage of the power of the white spaces.

Apple TV is rolling out at the same time, and Google feels that since their device melds the internet with traditional television that their device will be better than Apple’s. Google uses a variant of Android yet centers on a full Chrome browser and has Flash support which should allow most web videos to be viewed. Google is expecting that their device and Apple’s will not compete, but will co-exist and simply appeal to different audiences.

Google TV will allow you to do such things as talking friends on Facebook while also watching your favorite television program. Everything will be in real time, and it could help people stay in touch with each other while enjoying movies together, even if they are miles apart.

What do you think? Are you planning to get a Google TV device?
