2011: Year Of Organic Web

Some industry experts have been speculating that keyword rich domain names may be the next thing Google targets with its latest algorithm updates. The dilemma faced by many webmasters is whether they pick a domain name that is keyword specific or if they pick one that is more brandable such as zynga or digg. There are pros and cons to each strategy, but even Google’s own Matt Cutts had this to say about the situation: “…we have looked at the rankings and the weights that we give to keyword domains, & some people have complained that we are giving a little too much weight for keywords in domains. So we have been thinking about at adjusting that mix a bit and sort of turning the knob down within the algorithm, so that given 2 different domains it wouldn’t necessarily help you as much to have a domain name with a bunch of keywords in it.” Read more about this by clicking on the words 2011: Year Of The Organic Web.

SEO Held Liable, Fined In Counterfeiting Case

Just because you can rank for a certain term doesn’t mean you should. An SEO firm has been held liable for helping a client sell counterfeit goods. Moral of the story: Think carefully about the projects you choose. You could be a party to a lawsuit if you choose to work on the wrong project. What the JC Penney Link Buying Scandal Means for SEO 

In February the New York Times released a story about JC Penney being involved in a link spam scandal . If you missed the story, you can read it by clicking on the words link spam scandal. Basically the company was able to rank high in Google for lots of crucial terms by buying links on unrelated sites right in the middle of the holiday season. Once Google found out about this violation of Google’s terms of service, the links JC Penney paid for were buried in the search engine results.
