Google’s latest Webmaster video address a question about removing content from Google’s index. “We still have old content in the index. We block them via robots.txt, use 404 and delete them via Webmaster Tools, but Google keeps it. What can we do to quickly delete content from the index?”
So there you have it, if you want to remove old content from being indexed by Google you have to make sure the page is sending Google a 404.
