I have had good success using this technique in one of my blogs. However on my second blog SEO has not work so far. Do you need a certain amount of pages in order for the search engine to start sending a decent amount of traffic?

If you're talking about having the keyword in the domain that can help but that isn't a requirement. If you're able to buy a domain with your keyword in it then do so can set up a simple site talking about your main site....assuming your main site is already established.
