With all the heat Facebook has taken over the past year for its issues with privacy, it should be no surprise that a new open-sourced social network is surfacing. Scheduled to premiere on September 15 with an open-sourced developer release, Diaspora hopes to launch a consumer facing alpha in October.

What is Disapora? It’s a social network, much like Facebook, giving users an intuitive way of deciding how they want to share content. Users have the power to decide who gets to view what; meaning that coworkers don’t necessarily have to be privy to the same information as close friends and family.

Thanks to a lot of public donations, Disapora has enlisted designers like Janice Frasier for work on the project, ensuring that the new network will have a lot of fancy bells and whistles to complement its open-sourced format. Whether or not Disapora will become a real threat to Facebook remains to be seen, and will largely depend on the response from the business community. If companies begin making Disapora their new social networking home, Facebook will surely have to take notice and act accordingly.
