Facebook Integrated Into Skype 5.0

Skype 5.0 for Windows was just released and with it comes major improvements and feature additions, the most notable of these being the Facebook tab allowing users to chat, SMS, or call their Facebook friends via Skype right from the News Feed.

The Facebook News Feed option will display a digest of activity mirroring what users already see on Facebook, with the only difference being that below each status update there are two Skype buttons (Call and SMS). The buttons will only appears if Facebook Friends have included a phone number in their profile.

Facebook friends that are mutual connections on Skype will include with their information the option to initiate a free Skype call. Even if the Facebook friend isn't already a Skype connection, but both of you are on Skype at the same time, the same free call option is visible.

These new features are great for spontaneous outreach to Facebook friends, however, users can still access their Facebook contact lists for a more direct way to search for and contact specific friends via Skype.

While this Facebook feature dominates the new Skype 5.0, there's also improved 10-way group video calling, a retooled user experience, and enhanced contact lists. The company has also released an automatic recovery feature that retrieves disconnected video and audio feeds back up and running in a matter of seconds. This is great news for companies using Skype for video conferencing calls.

While this new version of Skype is only available to Windows users, the company has indicated they are working on a version for Mac as well.
