Path Launches with a Friend Limit of 50

The new start up, Path, was launched today. Path’s founders drew a lot of attention right from the start. That is because they are none other than Dave Morin, the former Facebook senior platform manager, Dustin Mierau, co-creator of Macster and Shawn Fanning, co-founder of Napster.

Path is formed to deliberately be the antithesis of Twitter as it has a friend limit of 50. According to the Path blog, Path is the personal network. A place to be yourself and share life with close friends and family.

The 50 limit was chosen based on the research of Oxford Professor Robin Dunbar, who suggested that 150 is the maximum number of social relationships that the human brain can sustain at any given time. Path is founded with the intention of keeping users in touch with 50 of their closest friends and family with the focus on building trust.

They rolled out today with an iPhone application. However if you do not have an iPhone, you could still register for and use Path on your browser.

What do you think is the future of Path? Is it a network you could really get into?
