Social networking is a must if you have an online business. This is a way to network with others running online businesses, and to meet potential customers. If you have never used a social networking site before, now is the time to start. They are fairly simple to use and can make all the difference to your business. Here are some tips to remember when using a social networking site.
  1. Do not send your first message asking someone to buy something. They will delete you and consider you spam. Even if you have something they want, if you spam them they will not become a customer.
  2. If you are using Twitter, do not set your auto welcome message to include an infomercial for your business. A simple “Hello, thanks for following me. I look forward to getting to know you and what you do” would be a great welcome message. You do not want to come off as a spammer.
  3. Get to know your social network contacts. Interacting with them is a great way to establish their needs. Do you have a product that they need, or maybe they know others that would be able to benefit from your services? Remember, there is a person on the other side of the message you are sending.
  4. Post often on your social networking site. A once a day post to use your services or to buy your product will not work. People will ignore you. Post several times a day with useful information. Share links you have found helpful to your business and your promoting.
  5. Search for people who have the same interests. (Ex. If you have a company that offers SEO services search for people interested in SEO.) It is a lot easier to sell a service or product to someone that actually wants it. Most social networking sites let you search by keywords. This will help you find contacts with the same interests.
  6. Pay attention to what your social network contacts are talking about. Share your information when it pertains to the conversation. Do not advertise when it has nothing to do with the discussion. People will tire of this very quickly.
Social networking will be around for some time. If you want to have a successful online business now is the time to jump on the social networking bandwagon.
