If you are one of the millions who use Facebook or Twitter, you may have seen this message from a friend: “u have to check out this website its glitchin right now and sending out ipads to everyone for free!”.
Sound too good to be true? It is. The message is sent from hacked accounts on Twitter and Facebook. What makes the messages more dangerous than usual is the fact that the messages look like they have come from your friends and family. This is actually a phishing scam where hackers are collecting the personal information of as many people as they can because online marketing programs will pay cash for such information. Hackers use such scams to pray on hopeful victims who think that they will be able to get some really nice. What they really get is taken advantage of.
The messages point to the website better-gifts.net. When a user goes to this website, they are asked to sign up with their personal information and then they are directed to promotional offers from a variety of companies that are legitimate and well-known. This companies include Netflix, Columbia House DVD, and the Doubleday Book Club.
If you enter your information, you will never see a free iPad. All you will have done is give away your information to be used for malicious purposes. You should make sure that you immediately report getting such a message to Twitter or Facebook so that they will be able to take care of it.
Currently only a small percentage of users on Facebook and Twitter are having their accounts hacked and sending out these fake messages. Both companies are taking the scam very seriously. Twitter is already hard at work resetting the passwords of the accounts that are known to be affected. Facebook has also reset passwords and both companies are warning users to be careful.
