Google Maps on the mobile 4.5 for Android has just got an upgrade. Google has introduced a new feature called Walking Navigation for Google Maps. This is a great combination of the existing Navigation on Android phones and the new features for walking directions. If you have an Android you can now use the Street View smart navigation or you can use the new Google Maps search bar.
When using Walking Navigation you will be able to use GPS navigation and get walking directions that give you a more direct path and will even tell you where there are pedestrian pathways. That is, if Google knows about them.
To try this, all you have to do is choose ‘walking’ from the Navigation icon. There are a few new changes that will help you get where you need to go. For example, the phone will vibrate whenever you need to turn. Vocal guidance can be turned off and you can just rely on the vibrations, letting you have a conversation or enjoy the sights around you. The map will rotate with you whenever you turn the phone and the satellite view is used by default in walking mode. You can even use it like a virtual compass thanks to the satellite imagery and you can look ahead or pick out landmarks along your route.
Keep in mind that the new Walking Navigation is still in beta so you may not always get the best information. It will improve over time though.
The Google Maps Search Bar appears at the top of the map and you can open Google Places, search, find your location, or use the layers menu. Search results can be filtered by ratings or by distance, you can view prices, and you can even see cross streets.
To get this new Walking Navigation, you will have to update Street View on Google Maps. Do you plan on giving it a try?
