In June, a bug found by a Google Engineer, revolved around the help and support system build into XP.  Around the middle of June the exploits began and these hackers adopting it with full abandon. It was found that it would be possible to exploit when it comes to the ability to give remote aid and apply fixes to machines that need aid.

Microsoft has stated that they have seen more then 10,000 machines hit by the hacker attack and to date they have yet to find a fix for this bug that is affecting the well established Windows XP operating system.

Reports of a variety of Trojans, spam tools and other viruses are being downloaded to compromised machines. Also what seems to be automated is the randomly generated web pages are hosting the exploit. Portugal, Russia and Croatia are the countries with the worst hits by these attackers.

Microsoft urges users to take steps to protect themselves from being attacked. They advise users to turn off the part of the Help and Support System that is vulnerable to this attack It has produced an automated tool that can do this for users. Make sure your antivirus software is up to date and is capable of identifying and can block malicious websites. The reason for this is that you can be certain that the hackers behind this are going to be constantly updating their malicious files to try to avoid traditional security measures.

In the meantime, we all have to sit back and wait for Microsoft as they work on a fix that will last and that will fix their loophole.
