How Does Google Rate Links From Twitter and Facebook?
Links from important and relevant websites have always been a fantastic way to build traffic and acceptance for a website in Google. So how does Google really rate links from new social sites like Twitter and Facebook to a website?
In this Video by Matt Cutts, head of Google’s webspam team, we get some answers to this question and more.
Matt brought up a very good point in this video. Some people on Facebook have their privacy settings set to “Private” but if you’d like Google to crawl your FB profile then you should have it set to “Public”.
Another interesting point that Matt made was; a link back to your site from a .gov or .edu URL does not carry more weight and will not boost your rankings.
Thanks Matt for clearing this up for us. Trend Watching at YouTube

Interesting especially the info about Twitter. This is good to know…Thanks
Being slightly over 40 and having jus opened our new Queenstown Country Lodge any information on such aspects as links is valuable. We have been getting a lot of emails about exchnaging links from non tourist/travel folks and have politely turned them down………now I am lost. Should these be accepted and described on our site or does this "cheapen" our site? I still have a long way to go to get out of the cave and into the 21st Centuary.
Well, I never tried to post a link on Facebook or Twitter. I never thought that it was that useful. But I will try to promote my blogs on Facebook and Twitter as well as other social networks.
I prefer to update status into Facebook and Twitter to get traffic as primary goal. The second goal is getting backlink. Thank you very much.
Interesting especially the info about Twitter. This is good to know…Thanks Matt.
At least in our web search (our organic rankings), we treat links the same from Twitter or Facebook or, you know, pick your favorite platform or website, just like we’d treat links from WordPress or .edu or.gov or anything like that. It’s not like a link from an .edu automatically carries more weight or a link from a .gov automatically carries more weight. But, the specific platforms might have issues, whether it’s not being crawled or it might be nofollow. It would keep those particular links from flowing pagerank.
Interesting, I still wonder how right now a webmaster or marketer can utilize face book. Face book seems great to socialize, play games and have a snoop in to others lives but when it comes to using it as a sales tool. or SEO tool I cannot be convinced. If I made 500 pages would the time and resources required be better than what we have been doing the last 5 years? Face book is not the next Google and Google is not the next face book.
It seems Google just view Face book just as any other large web site and we know getting links from these sites ultimately dont have the success you can get from just a plain forum .
Thanks for the info. I thought that page rank mattered too.
Thanks for the video. Does Google follow links that are shortened?
I have heard it taught that .edu and .gov links hold more weight than .com links. It was nice to hear Matt's perspective.
Thanks again.

Very interesting post, everibody thinks that a link from facebook it's gold.
However, i do not believe everything that Matt says.
He's making waves every time when comes up with a new video.
Nice work!
nice
A most very interesting article and thank your for uploading the video.
Links on a Facebook Page are nofollowed too, so they will not pass any Google juice!
You can easily check if links are “do-follow ” or “no-follow” with this FF add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/56…
